Study Shows Empathy can be Contagious: Implications for the Workplace

The study published in the Pnas science journal highlights the role of others’ reactions in shaping our empathy levels. Professor Grit Hein and his colleagues found that empathy can increase or decrease based on how we perceive others’ reactions to pain videos. The study involved 50 women who watched pain videos, rated their sensations, observed others’ reactions, and then evaluated a new person’s pain.

The research revealed that participants became more or less empathetic based on how others had reacted to the pain videos. Brain imaging conducted during the experiments showed that empathy was specifically learned from others, rather than simply imitated. This finding emphasizes the importance of creating an environment in organizational settings that promotes empathy in the workplace.
